From Struggle to Peace with Alignment
We talk a lot about transformation in healthcare.
Changing policies. Restructuring systems. Building new models of care.
But what I’ve learned through my own journey is this:
The first system you must transform is your own.
You can’t lead from burnout. You can’t pour from an empty cup. And you certainly can’t build a people-first healthcare system while running on fumes.
Alignment isn’t just a buzzword. It’s the foundation for real, sustainable leadership. It’s what allows you to show up with clarity, compassion, and calm—no matter what chaos the system throws at you.
So, what is alignment? How do you know when you’ve lost it? And what does it feel like when you finally come home to yourself?
Let me take you back.
Misalignment Feels Like Force
For years, I believed that working harder was the answer.
Longer hours. More giving. Less rest.
I wore my resilience like armour. I thought sacrifice was a badge of honour.
But slowly, I started to feel it in my body: the tension, the fatigue, the resistance. It was like everything required effort. Nothing flowed.
Even the things I loved felt heavy. I was pushing through, not showing up.
That’s what misalignment feels like: force. You have to make things happen. Convince. Prove. Push.
And you start to lose yourself in the process.
Until one day, my nervous system said, “enough.”
And that’s when everything changed.
The Vow That Changed Everything
In 2020, I made a simple but powerful promise to myself:
“I’m going to take care of me now.”
Not just squeeze in some self-care. But truly prioritize my peace, my body, and my truth.
I sold everything. I moved to Mexico. I gave myself space to heal.
And what happened next felt like magic.
It was like I had tapped the first domino in a long chain. Everything started to flow.
I found the perfect apartment. I met the right people. I stumbled into ceremony and began peeling away layers of who I thought I had to be.
I reconnected with my feminine energy. I found softness, grace, and deep inner calm.
I stopped trying to be perfect. I stopped proving. I started listening.
And for the first time in a long time—
Life felt easy.
That’s what alignment feels like.
Alignment Feels Like This
- You breathe deeper.
- You feel peaceful in your body.
- You stop second-guessing everything.
- You feel clear about what’s a yes—and what’s a sacred no.
- You stop wearing masks.
You start leading from your true self. Not from fear. Not from pressure. Not from performance.
You stop chasing what you “should” do and start living what you know is right.
You lead with presence. You lead with grace. You lead with love.
That’s alignment.
Masks Keep Us Stuck
Here’s the thing.
Most of us are wearing masks.
We show up one way at work. Another with our family. Another with friends. Another when we’re alone.
And we start to forget who we really are underneath it all.
The mask becomes so familiar, we think it is us.
But it’s not. And deep down, we know it.
That’s where the pressure comes from. That’s where the burnout brews.
Alignment is when the mask comes off. It’s when we stop performing and start being.
When we remember who we are, and let her lead.
Returning to Leadership with Clarity
After Mexico, I got called back to Canada to work on health transformation.
And this time, I came back aligned.
I found my dream condo on the river. My plants flourished. My space supported me.
And for the first time, I realized:
The same process I used to transform myself… could be used to transform systems.
Because aligned leadership isn’t just personal. It’s systemic.
When you’re aligned:
- You’re not reactive. You’re responsive.
- You’re not controlling. You’re co-creating.
- You’re not drained. You’re energized.
That’s the kind of leadership that builds a new future—and keeps you well while doing it.
Red Flags You’re Out of Alignment
Let’s talk about signs.
Here’s how I know I’m starting to drift:
- I feel ignored and crave validation.
- My body feels tense or unsettled.
- I get short-tempered or irritable.
- I start self-criticizing or pushing for perfection again.
These are old patterns. They sneak back in. But the difference now is: I see them. I notice. And I course-correct.
Because once you know what alignment feels like… You never want to lose it again.
How I Return to Alignment
When I feel myself slipping out of sync, I return to the things that bring me back:
- Walking barefoot in the grass
- Touching my plants
- Sitting by the river
- Moving my body gently
- Giving myself permission to pause
Nature helps. So does stillness. So does remembering that I don’t have to do it all.
Because real alignment comes when you listen. Not when you push.
Alignment Makes You a Better Leader
When I’m aligned, I don’t take things personally. I don’t need to be liked. I don’t wear a mask.
I’m able to lead with candour, clarity, and calm. I can speak the truth with love. I can hear others without absorbing their pain.
That’s the kind of leadership our systems are starving for.
Patient-centred. Heart-led. Rooted in truth.
And you don’t get there through more hustle. You get there by coming home to yourself.
Final Thoughts
Alignment isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present.
You will flow in and out of it. That’s human. But every time you return to it, you get stronger.
And as you build that strength, you become the kind of leader who doesn’t just survive the system—you change it.
From the inside out.
