The First System You Must Transform is Your Own

How real leadership and healthcare change starts in your own body, nervous system, and beliefs

We talk a lot about fixing the healthcare system—and yes, change is needed fast. But here’s a truth many people ignore:

You can’t fix the healthcare system if you’re running on empty.

As a nurse practitioner, I thought I could lead change by working harder. I stayed late. I helped more patients. I pushed through burnout, hoping that one more good shift or one more policy would make a difference.

But in 2020, I hit a wall. I was exhausted. My body felt numb. I wasn’t thinking clearly anymore.

That year, I stepped away. Not because I failed—but because I finally saw the truth:
The system I was trying to fix was also breaking me.

In the quiet that followed, I realized:
The first system I needed to transform wasn’t “healthcare.” It was me.

The Real Work Begins Within

If you’re a changemaker, CEO, doctor, nurse, NP, Indigenous health worker, or someone trying to help your community…you’ve probably been giving everything to broken systems for years.

But here’s the hard truth:
You can’t change systems if you’re drained.

When we lead from burnout:

  • We make fast, short-term decisions.
  • We act out of stress.
  • We confuse being busy with making a difference.

Real leadership…the kind that lasts…begins when we ask ourselves:

  • Am I okay?
  • Am I calm?
  • Am I healthy?

That’s why I created Healthcare Transformation Mastery™. This program isn’t just about rules or leadership tips. It’s about healing the leader—you—first.

Here are the 3 pillars that guide this inner transformation.

🌿 Pillar 1: AWAKEN

Awaken means seeing clearly what’s no longer working. Not just in the system, but in ourselves.

In my case, awakening looked like this:

  • I ignored headaches, stomach pain, and exhaustion.
  • I thought it was just part of the job.
  • I wore “resilience” like armour.

But here’s the truth:
Resilience without rest is self-abandonment.

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I out of balance?
  • What am I putting up with that’s hurting me?
  • What beliefs do I carry that no longer serve me?

Awakening can feel painful, but it’s also freeing.
It’s the first step to healing.

“The truth will set you free—but first, it will piss you off.” — Gloria Steinem

🧘 Pillar 2: LISTEN

After awakening, the next step is to listen.

In healthcare, we were trained to trust numbers and facts. But we weren’t taught to listen to our own bodies—or our feelings.

LISTEN is about:

  • Slowing down
  • Tuning in
  • Building body awareness

Signs you need to LISTEN:

  • You push through tiredness without rest
  • You feel disconnected from joy
  • You’re snappy or numb, but don’t know why

Ask yourself:

  • What is my body telling me?
  • Where do I feel tightness or truth?
  • Do I ever feel truly safe?

“Trauma is not what happens to you. It’s what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.” — Dr. Gabor Maté

When we listen, we start to feel safe again.
And when we feel safe, we can lead clearly and with purpose.

⚖️ Pillar 3: ALIGN

Align means that your values, your goals, and your actions match.

This is what makes the difference between leaders who burn out and leaders who shine.

For me, alignment meant:

  • Building a business that respected my energy
  • Saying no to things that didn’t feel right
  • Leading with truth, not pressure

Ask yourself:

  • Does my work reflect what I believe in?
  • Am I proud of how I show up?
  • Am I caring for myself while helping others?

“When you align your health with your purpose, you become unstoppable.”

When you’re aligned, people notice. You become a calm, clear, and trusted leader.

Spoiler Alert….I’ll talk more soon about how these same 3 pillars can help change entire healthcare systems. But today, let’s focus on you. 😊

Micro-Practices for Real-Life Change

You don’t have to quit your job tomorrow. Start small. Small actions can create big changes.

Try these:

  • Take 3 deep breaths before your next meeting. Ask: “Am I present?”
  • Write down one part of your life that feels out of balance. Just notice it—no judgment.
  • Set a timer for 5 minutes each day. Do nothing but breathe and feel your body.

These are small steps. But they’re powerful acts of self-leadership.

Final Thoughts

If you want to help change the system, start with your own system—your body, your thoughts, your nervous system.

You matter.
Your health matters.
Your leadership should not cost you your well-being.

We heal ourselves first, then we change everything else.

Join me next week on the podcast and blog as we talk more about what “alignment” really feels like—and how to stay grounded when the world feels too loud.

Until then, stay grounded, stay curious, and stay true.
